SUMMARY:Sarah Smelser | Hodophilia
DESCRIPTION:A hodophile is a lover of travel\, a wanderer\, a walker\, a restless spirit: someone who travels to escape\, walks to think\, and wanders to learn about the world but moreover to repeatedly discover oneself. The works in Hodophilia are inspired by physical and psychic journeys: navigating labyrinthian footpaths on the island of Skopelos\, Greece; climbing the sun-scorched hills of Santa Cruz\, CA; and hiking in New Mexico’s Sandia Mountains. \nWhat happens when you travel? Ideally\, you step away from workaday cares\, emails\, leaky faucets\, and sweeping the driveway. You can remake yourself\, not only as a person without these trappings but also as someone full of curiosity\, open to new opportunities\, with fresh eyes to take in the world. These fresh eyes\, along with a sturdy pair of shoes and a cell phone\, help me build and maintain my studio practice; I use memory\, impression\, and my experiences as a traveler to cobble together an invented\, non-traditional landscape.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Sarah Smelser has been an artist in residence at Vermont Studio Center; Franz Masereel Center\, Artica Bilbao\, Kala Art Institute\, Jentel Artist Residency\, Skopelos Foundation for the Arts\, Anchor Graphics\, Ballinglen Arts Foundation\, Tamarind Institute\, and Remarque Print Workshop. In 2022 she was a research associate at the Contemporary Print Media Research Center at University of California Santa Cruz. Her work is in such collections as Readers’ Digest Association\, New York Public Library\, Library of Congress\, Hallmark Corporate Collection\, Microsoft Corporate Collection\, and Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Smelser has had solo exhibitions in venues such as Bridgewater/Lustberg & Blumenfeld in New York City\, Kathryn Markel Fine Arts in New York City\, Urban Institute for Contemporary Art in Grand Rapids\, and the LUX Center for the Arts in Omaha. Her work has been included in invitational and juried shows\, and been shown at numerous art fairs including Art Frankfurt\, Estampa Madrid\, the Affordable Art Fair in New York\, Art Miami\, Red Dot Art Fair in New York and Miami\, Art Santa Fe\, Art Chicago\, EDITION Chicago\, Boston Print Fair\, Baltimore Contemporary Print Fair\, Editions/Artists’ Book Fair\, and the Los Angeles Art Show. \nSmelser’s work has been reviewed in Art on Paper: The Journal of Prints\, Drawings and Photography\, Abstract Art Online\, Monotype\, Monoprint\, & Strappo Ezine and reproduced in New American Paintings. Smelser received her BA from University of California Santa Cruz\, and her MA and MFA from the University of Iowa and is the 2022-24 Harold Boyd Endowed Professor in the Wonsook Kim School of Art at Illinois State University in Normal\, IL.

SUMMARY:Exposed and Impressed
DESCRIPTION:Opening reception: February 6th 2026\, 5-8pm\nShowing 2/6/2026 – 2/27/2026 \nThis exhibition explores the spaces where photography and print media intersect- where light becomes ink and images are transformed through hand-pulled techniques. Artists explore techniques like photo lithography\, photo-screenprinting\, photopolymer intaglio\, and alternative photographic processes\, among others\, embracing hybrid approaches to image-making. \nWith a focus on experimentation and material exploration\, the works included in this exhibit push beyond traditional methods\, layering photographic and print-based techniques to create work that is both technically refined and conceptually compelling. \nExposed & Impressed explores the alchemy of process: the unpredictable\, the tactile\, and the transformative. \nImage above: Sophie Lin Paper Lanterns (photo litho and screen print). Esther Jung and Soraya Jabir Malleable Walls (cyanotype\, cotton fabric) \nParticipating artists: \nNEBA\nEsther Jung\nSophie Lin\nCarlin Dypko\nBradley Verhelle\nElla Kirlew\nAseel Albokhari\nAngelina Rappa\nPhoebe Finkel\nAnton Nazarenko\nKatelyn Yun\nJack Clauss\nSoraya Jabir

SUMMARY:Repeat | Jessica Warner & Kat Moore
DESCRIPTION:Repeat | Jessica Warner & Kat Moore\n2025-26 Fellowship Exhibit \nThe Ink Shop is excited to present the work of Jessica Warner (Kahn Family Fellow) and Kat Moore (Fred Madden Fellow).  \nJessica explores movement\, change and the passage of time through processes that involve accumulation\, repetition and contradiction. The unsettled state of the world currently is a backdrop for exploring the parallel forward and backward movement of cycles of creation and destruction. \nDrawn to the CMYK screenprinting method\, Kat layers color as a way to map the complexities of perception and thought and is obsessed with incorporating textiles\, whether physical or implied. “I stitch together the fragments of the inner and outer worlds that I move through.” This body of work consists of sheer curtains layered with hand-drawn screenprinted plaid prints and images of a particularly important moment of self-reflection. \nDrawing each line in the plaid is a repetitive action that reflects the repetitive nature of screenprinting. This repetitive process has also revealed itself as a personal coping mechanism for my own navigation of obsessive thought patterns. As I layer the controlled patterns of plaid with the layers of an image of a natural space\, I consider the notion of how obsessive thoughts work in tandem against the natural flowing of changes in one’s environment. No matter how much you extract each layer of obsessive thoughts\, the patterns of self-realization eventually emerge. \n

SUMMARY:Lisa Mackie | The Forest for the Trees - and the Sea
DESCRIPTION:October 2 – November 20\, 2026 \nAbout the exhibit“A meadow in the Hudson Valley that grew into a mid-growth forest near a tidal inlet of the Hudson River has provided the inspiration for artist Lisa Mackie’s most recent body of work: FOREST FOR THE TREES…AND THE SEA. With a longtime interest in botany and the natural sciences\, Mackie offers us both the macro and micro visions of nature. Her works are not pictures of nature but instead are a wealth of both intimate and majestic sensory impressions of nature. \nThis work had grown from a fecund cross-pollination of media\, images and ideas. Mackie germinates her art by producing mono-prints and photo images of textures and patterns. These then grow into her paintings\, collages\, and eccentric organic book forms – forms that literally and figuratively expand and grow. Detail is manifest at each scale – from seedling to sapling to “mature growth” pieces that tower above us. Taken as a whole\, the exhibition embodies the early American ideal “out of one – many.” — Larry List 2026 \nJoin Lisa for this wonderful monoprint workshop:Monoprints in the Style of Wolf Kahn | Lisa MackieSaturday 11/21    10 AM – 3 PM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n The Artwork of Lisa Mackie“The word “Michi” is Japanese for pathway. A “Michi” is a walkway usually in a garden or small unpaved sidewalk. It can also refer to a path of thought\, a way\, or direction… My artwork is a compilation of picture fragments that I have photographed drawn and written about and remembered. The images deal with a delicate balance between cognition and process. The source of each large ‘circle’ of work has been initiated as an investigation of a sequence. Initially\, ‘the sequence is explored in the form of several related unique books that are both visual and written. Paintings\, paper pieces\, text\, computer generated images\, and sculpture develop from the process of tracing and editing all the materials. Through my own intuitive explanation\, I again uncover more visuals and text. I have found that by tracking the evolution of each image\, and by further scrutinizing and honing there is a type of infinity that results. \nMackie is the proprietor of Lisa H. Mackie Studios\, an open\, contract\, fine art print shop established in NYC\, 1990. Lisa is a Master Printer with 40 years experience in lithography\, intagilo etching\, silkscreen\, monotyupe/print\, multiplate color printmaking\, photo/print processes including Solar Plates\, photo litho\, Pronto Plate and printing from a Xerox Copy\, also Western and Asian paper-making. \nShe has a BFA and MFA in painting and printmaking from the University of Michigan and University of Wisconsin. Her clients include artists such as Marylyn Dintenfass\, Amy Ernst\, Grace Hartigan\, Katherine Kadish\, Wolf Kahn\, Sol Lewitt\, Emily Mason and Marianne Weil. SUMMARY:H. Peter Kahn | Painter\, Printmaker\, Typographer
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception Friday\, December 4th\, 2026 5-8pm \n \n \n \n \n \n The Ink Shop is honored to celebrate the work of H. Peter Kahn (1921–1997)\, an accomplished printmaker\, painter\, typographer\, and teacher whose artistic vision and generous mentorship helped inspire the founding of the Ink Shop. At the invitation of Kahn’s family\, we have been welcomed into the drawers and stacks of his work\, bringing together woodcuts\, drawings\, books\, and papers that offer an intimate look at a remarkably varied creative life. Known to many in our community as a skilled artist\, printmaker and mentor. \nKahn’s influence extended beyond the work he produced to the students and fellow artists he encouraged\, the knowledge he shared\, and the creative community he helped nurture. For the Ink Shop\, presenting his work is a way to honor that legacy. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n For Peter Kahn\, typography was together an art and a craft\, shaped by the history of writing\, printing\, and bookmaking. In Letters\, Lines and Pages\, he encouraged learning through practice and close observation\, showing how letterforms\, text\, and page design work together to communicate meaning. He believed that good printmaking combined technical skill with an appreciation for history and craftsmanship. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Excerpts from Letters\, Lines and Pages: A Practical Book of Letters by Peter Kahn\, published by Fall Creek Press in 1982.
