SUMMARY:Kaleb Hunkele | False Wall
DESCRIPTION:False Wall is a combination of materials\, process\, and prints. Two traditions inspire the patterns that make up these tiled prints: woven textiles and screen printed editions. Bringing the two together requires repetitive motion that results in repeating patterns and editions\, as many weavings and prints will do. These pieces\, made of found material cut to size and pattern-printed\, upend efficient regularity and instead rely on hand-painted backgrounds to bring irregularity to the changing movement of the body into the work. \nAs a printmaker\, I can’t refuse repetition and reproducible form outright. Still\, I do what I can to push against the disappearance of both authorship and the means of production that often go along with prints and textiles. False Wall invites you to a home where the processes of making and viewing come together not only as an encounter with still objects but rather\, colorful planes that convey both thought and feeling while reinterpreting tradition. \n\nThis pop-up exhibit will be visible from the sidewalk at Cayuga St. Gimme! 430 N Cayuga St\, Ithaca\, NY 14850\n\n

SUMMARY:I See You (IC/CU) 2020
DESCRIPTION:The Ink Shop is pleased to host the 5th joint show of prints by students of two strong printmaking programs at Ithaca College and Cornell University. The fine art print possesses conceptual complexity which is deeply embedded in contemporary art practices. These prints explore aspects of this conversation\, questioning what prints are and how they function. These works are richly diverse with unique approaches using traditional methods\, ranging from beginner to advanced practitioners. Accessing a rich history of distributable and reproducible media\, these prints are placed square in our present\, digital moment and present questions both age-old and prescient.\nThis year we will host the I See You (IC/CU) Exhibit as an Instagram takeover! Starting Monday July 13th for the next month professors from Ithaca College and Cornell printmaking departments will be taking turns a week at a time posting student prints here for our virtual I See You exhibit. #printmaking #cornell #ithacaart #cornellaap #ithacacollegeartdepartment \n\n \n \n \n \n \n [instagram-feed]

SUMMARY:Justin Greenwald | Clarity through Chaos
DESCRIPTION:The Ink Shop is excited to show the work of Justin Greenwald. This two month show was awarded to Justin as a prize won through the first juried Solarplate Triennial Exhibit in 2019. \nJustin Greenwald’s work includes drawings\, paintings and prints. Clarity through Chaos is an exhibit of his solarplate etchings and monotypes which are concerned with repetitive mark making. Justin uses numbers and equations and occasionally words in his prints. “I’ve been a very obsessive person since early on”\, says Justin. “It’s at once a gift and a disorder. The emotion and expressiveness behind the marks or lines is always evolving\, even within a single print or painting.” Justin finds the fickleness or ephemeral quality of the image lends to the recording of life’s timetable. \nA good number Justin’s prints are of a reductive nature\, where the metal backed polymer plate is coated with ink\, and then drawn into or scratched away at using a variety of tools\, including sticks\, twigs\, chopsticks\, pencils\, and rags\, before being processed or hardened in the sun or under a light box. Solarplate etching allows for photographic work\, although Justin prefers to draw. \nHis friend and employer Dan Welden\, who developed Solarplate etching in the 1970’s\, collaborated with him this past summer on a series of monotypes overlayed with one of two Solarplates\, of which six pieces are displayed in this exhibit. \nThe Solorplate Triennial was founded and organized by Dan Welden and the jury consisted of Laura Einstein\, manager of the Mezzanine Gallery at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Alex Ferrone\, owner/director of the Alex Ferrone Gallery in Cutchogue\, NY; and Ron Pokrasso\, Santa Fe artist and world printmaking traveler. The awards juror is the acclaimed international artist Eric Fischl.
