Experience a technique in printmaking that uses a textural collage-like surface, but can have the range and nuance of intaglio. Using matboard as a base plate, textures such as fabric, sandpaper, string and various papers are glued to the matboard and coated with acrylic polymer. Painterly textures can be created with modeling paste and gesso. Any style of art, abstract or representational, is applicable to the collagraph. There is no acid biting or exotic tools. The collagraph plate is printed with etching ink in an etching press. No experience is necessary to explore this wonderful technique!

Copper plate etching is a process where a polished piece of copper is processed with either engraving or an acid bath with the intention of creating grooves and lines to hold ink. Ink is applied to the whole plate, then carefully wiped down leaving the ink the grooves and lines. The plate is then ran through the press with a sheet of damp paper for the final print.

In this course we will cover the basic methods and techniques of etching, as well as explore some "experimental" mark making approaches. The course is two days, which will allow for enough time to get everyone to the printing stage of the process. In addition to the processes and techniques, I will promote an exploration of imagery, composition and themes because printmakers are artists too!

Photo Lithography (Beginner, Teen to Adult) | Jennifer Scheuer

Sat 5/30 11 - 5pm

Sun 5/31 11 - 5pm

$180 non-associates / $153 associates ($30 for materials)

Photo Lithography for beginners introduces the possibilities and ease of this lithographic process to make prints from a drawing or cut outs on a transparency. Photolithography is an aluminum plate that is covered with a photosensitive emulsion, and a positive is placed in contact with the plate and exposed to ultraviolet light. After development the plate is rolled up with ink and printed on a lithography press on fine art paper.

Please come with a sketch that may be realized with an aesthetic of a pencil drawing or ink wash as we will draw with stabilo pencils, grease crayons, and ink/tusche. In this workshop students will create a two color print using a key image with a color run. Plate preparation, registration, black and colored inks will be covered, as well as additional hand coloring with techniques using the press (monotype, stencil, pochoir). Emphasis will be placed on experimentation and the use of the multiple to create individualize imagery. Bring brushes, and colored pencils/watercolor for additional color exploration. Final print 11" x 15"

Sun 5/17 12-4pm

$120 non-associates / $102 associates ($35 for materials)

We will work rapidly, producing a series of monotypes exploring the broad range of marks and textural possibilities available to the medium. I find Gerhard Richter's abstract paintings might provide   some inspiration for the class- they surrender some degree of conscious control and trust in processes like squeegee-ing, wiping, pressing, scraping (sometimes alongside traditional brushstrokes) to make powerful and arresting works.
