This workshop introduces students to the expressive process of soft ground etching on copper plates. Over the span of three guided 3-hour sessions, students will explore the unique textures and line qualities made possible through soft ground printmaking. Participants will learn each step of the process—from preparing and applying a soft ground to a 4×4” copper plate, to creating impressions with drawing materials and textured objects, biting the plate, inking, and printing on the press. Students are encouraged to bring ideas, fabrics, leaves, or other textured materials they’d like to experiment with. By the end of the workshop, participants will create unique prints and gain a strong foundation in soft ground intaglio techniques.
