About the exhibit
“A meadow in the Hudson Valley that grew into a mid-growth forest near a tidal inlet of the Hudson River has provided the inspiration for artist Lisa Mackie’s most recent body of work: FOREST FOR THE TREES…AND THE SEA. With a longtime interest in botany and the natural sciences, Mackie offers us both the macro and micro visions of nature. Her works are not pictures of nature but instead are a wealth of both intimate and majestic sensory impressions of nature.
This work had grown from a fecund cross-pollination of media, images and ideas. Mackie germinates her art by producing mono-prints and photo images of textures and patterns. These then grow into her paintings, collages, and eccentric organic book forms – forms that literally and figuratively expand and grow. Detail is manifest at each scale – from seedling to sapling to “mature growth” pieces that tower above us. The Artwork of Lisa Mackie
“The word “Michi” is Japanese for pathway. A “Michi” is a walkway usually in a garden or small unpaved sidewalk. It can also refer to a path of thought, a way, or direction… My artwork is a compilation of picture fragments that I have photographed drawn and written about and remembered. The images deal with a delicate balance between cognition and process. The source of each large ‘circle’ of work has been initiated as an investigation of a sequence. Initially, ‘the sequence is explored in the form of several related unique books that are both visual and written. Paintings, paper pieces, text, computer generated images, and sculpture develop from the process of tracing and editing all the materials. Through my own intuitive explanation, I again uncover more visuals and text. I have found that by tracking the evolution of each image, and by further scrutinizing and honing there is a type of infinity that results.
Mackie is the proprietor of Lisa H. Mackie Studios, an open, contract, fine art print shop established in NYC, 1990. Lisa is a Master Printer with 40 years experience in lithography, intagilo etching, silkscreen, monotyupe/print, multiplate color printmaking, photo/print processes including Solar Plates, photo litho, Pronto Plate and printing from a Xerox Copy, also Western and Asian paper-making.
She has a BFA and MFA in painting and printmaking from the University of Michigan and University of Wisconsin. Her clients include artists such as Marylyn Dintenfass, Amy Ernst, Grace Hartigan, Katherine Kadish, Wolf Kahn, Sol Lewitt, Emily Mason and Marianne Weil. Lisa’s New York City print Studio is sunny and fully equipped with a 36×60 Charles Brand Etching Press, Asian Papermaking facilities, and plate and stone lithography.
Mackie is represented by June Kelly Gallery in New York City since 1989. Notable solo exhibitions and installations include Rondo/India (2024), which translated her sensorial memories of a 1999 journey through India into abstract cinematic motion, and Here Then and Now (2018). Her work is included in prominent international institutions such as the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, The Baltimore Museum of Art, The Brooklyn Museum , and The Botswana National Museum of Art.
